Psalm 121, A Song of Ascents

Psalm 121, A Song of Ascents

Psalm 121 is a common chapter in Bible that every Sunday School student memorizes. I had memorized the whole "Psalm 121", all 8 verses at the age of 10. All 8 verses of this Chapter emphasizes that Yahweh is our helper in every walk of life. Below are all the 8 verses of Psalm 121.

1 I will lift up my eyes to the hills.
Where does my help come from?

2 My help comes from Yahweh,
who made heaven and earth.

3 He will not allow your foot to be moved.
He who keeps you will not slumber.

4 Behold, he who keeps Israel
will neither slumber nor sleep.

5 Yahweh is your keeper.
Yahweh is your shade on your right hand.

6 The sun will not harm you by day,
nor the moon by night.

7 Yahweh will keep you from all evil.
He will keep your soul.

8 Yahweh will keep your going out and your coming in,
from this time forward, and forever more.

Among all the familiar psalms like Psalm 23, Psalm 27, Psalm 51, etc., Psalm 121 is also very familiar. Many wonder what does I will lift up my eyes to the hills mean. Whenever we are in need of help, we look at the people who are capable of helping. When we are in need of money, we look to the friends who are rich. When we need help in terms of understanding, we reach to the people who are knowledgeful. They are like hills to us. In dire need, people look towards the sky. As a Christian, our whole trust should be in God, Jehovah Jireh, who provides all and he is our only helper in every kind of need.

The write of the Psalm 121 had experienced the God's protection. This chapter mostly focus on God's protection in our day to day lives. David knew and he had witnessed God's protection in his life and that is evidenced when he talks to Saul about fighting with Goliath. When none from the Israelites' army ready to fight with Goliath, David had the courage. This courage came from his trust on God

As you go through the verses of Psalm 121, may God give you confidence to fight all your problems that seem like Goliath. A simple trust in the Lord is enough to fight with those because who helps us doesn't slumber nor sleep. God bless you with these verses.
